Hyaluronic Acid in Skincare: What It Does and How to Use It

Hyaluronic acid is a water-binding ingredient used in serums, moisturisers, masks and cleansers. In topical skincare, its clearest role is helping the outer skin feel more hydrated and look temporarily smoother.

Despite the word acid, it is not an exfoliating acid like glycolic or salicylic acid. It does not remove dead skin cells, and a topical serum is not the same as an injectable dermal filler.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid, often shortened to HA, is a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in the body, including the skin and connective tissues. In a cosmetic formula it acts mainly as a humectant, an ingredient that attracts and holds water.

Hyaluronic acid is a large molecule, and cosmetic manufacturers use HA and related salts or modified forms in different molecular sizes. These differences can affect how a formula behaves on and within the outer skin.

Lower molecular weight is often marketed as penetrating more deeply, while higher molecular weight HA tends to form a water-binding film nearer the surface. The science is more complicated than “smaller is always better”. Formula stability, concentration, the combination of ingredients and the finished product all matter.

Should you apply it to damp or dry skin?

Many people apply a hyaluronic acid serum to slightly damp skin, then follow with moisturiser. This can be a comfortable method because the serum spreads easily and the next step helps reduce water loss.

It is not a universal rule. Some products are designed for dry skin, and applying a formula differently from its directions can affect how it layers or pills. Follow the instructions on the product first.

A practical sequence is:

  1. Cleanse gently.

  4. Follow with moisturiser.

Can you use hyaluronic acid with other ingredients?

Hyaluronic acid is generally used as a hydrating support ingredient rather than a strong active treatment, so it appears in routines alongside many other cosmetic ingredients.

Compatibility depends on the complete formulas, not only the headline ingredient. Two products can both contain HA and still pill because of their textures. A serum can also sting because it contains fragrance, alcohol or another ingredient, even if HA itself is usually well tolerated.

If you use a prescribed or medicated topical product, follow its directions. Ask a pharmacist or clinician where a cosmetic serum should sit if the instructions are unclear.

The useful decision is simple. Try hyaluronic acid if you want a lightweight hydration step and your current routine is not quite comfortable. Apply it as directed and follow with moisturiser.
